Tuacahn High School Teacher Receives Master’s Degree Scholarship

Governor Congratulates

Angela Madsen is the honored recipient of a $5,000 scholarship – to be used towards a master’s degree – offered annually by The Enterprise business newspaper and Utah’s University of Phoenix campus. Selected by a panel of local business and community leaders, she was congratulated by Utah Governor Jon Huntsman in his office on Wednesday, December 3.

“In the past, we’ve offered an MBA scholarship,” said Utah Campus Vice President/Director Darris Howe, MPA.  “But this year we offered the recipient a choice between an MBA and a master’s in education.  We were quite pleased to see Angela choose this education degree.  We need strong teachers to shape the future leaders of Utah.

From Scribbles to Essays

All teachers have amazing student success stories.  Ms. Madsen’s favorite is about one of her prior 11th graders.  Try as she might, she could not read his handwriting.  She came to the realization that he scribbled in order to cover-up the fact that his English skills were that of a 6th grader.  She dedicated herself to helping him catch up, worked with him one-on-one, and by the time he graduated, he was writing essays for her.

Prior to moving to St. George in 2003, Ms. Madsen was a high school teacher in North Dakota.  She is now enrolled in the University of Phoenix campus in St. George, Utah. Her husband is a gemologist and the couple is dedicated to supporting the local family jewelry business, Legacy Diamonds and Design, on 74 East Tabernacle, Saint George.
