Access Restrictions in Place as Grading and Drainage Work Begins on Replacement Airport
R. E. Monks, the excavation general contractor on the St. George Replacement Airport project recently began grading and drainage operations on October 1, 2008 and at this time full-scale earth moving and blasting work is in progress. Richard Monks, president of R. E. Monks Construction Company, has directed his staff to seek out and employ local workers on this project. As a result, approximately 90% of the workers have been hired from the Southern Utah area. They currently do not have any open positions but interested persons are still encouraged to check on-line through the company web site at www.remonks.com. The contractor and his crews are currently working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week to achieve the projected completion date of March 30, 2009. Ongoing operations involving heavy equipment and blasting activity will facilitate the movement of approximately four million cubic yards of material on this first phase of the airport project. Due to the dangerous nature of this work, R. E. Monks Construction Company and the City of St. George are advising everyone including four-wheel drive and recreation vehicles enthusiasts that there is no access through or around this site. Violators will be cited for trespassing. The City is creating a website and an on-location observation area for those interested in monitoring the progress of the project throughout construction. Access restrictions are for everyone’s protection and help to keep safety a priority on the St. George Replacement Airport Project. The ceremonial groundbreaking for the replacement airport was held on site on Friday, October 17, 2008. For more information please visit www.sgcity.org.
