2008 Jubilee of Trees Partners with Kohl’s and Local Elementary Schools

Nothing sparkles like the eyes of a child who has just learned to give.

That is why Christmas tree lights aren’t the only things that will be twinkling at the 2008 Jubilee of Trees, November 19 through 24 at the Dixie Center. Once again this year the Jubilee is partnering with Kohl’s department stores and Washington County elementary schools to create the “Spirit of Children” tree display. With decorations made and donated by kids, these trees are a perennial favorite at the Jubilee of Trees.

This year the St. George Kohl’s department store has given over $12,000 to sponsor the Spirit of Children program. With help from teachers and volunteers, children from more than a dozen local schools will decorate the trees. The process is more than just a fun art project for the students. For many, it provides a first-time glimpse into the joy of volunteering.

The Spirit of Children trees are sold during the course of the Jubilee. In addition, event attendees are invited to vote—at a cost of $1 per vote—for their favorite tree. Proceeds raised in the Spirit of Children program are directed to enhancing in-school health education programs. Proceeds in 2007 totaled $5,000.

Stephanie Davis, who, with Julie Smith, co-chairs the Spirit of Children display, says that participating helps children feel like they are part of a bigger cause. “The students have the opportunity to walk through the display and see not only what they have done, but the creativity of students across Washington County. It helps them understand that this is going to something special—that they are helping other kids like them.”

Kohl’s believes in giving back to their communities by encouraging their associates and management to volunteer their time. Kohl’s matches employee contributions with a charitable donation.  This is one way Kohl’s Cares for KidsÒ program partners with local hospitals to support healthy children.  Additional funds are raised through the sales of special themed plush animals and books.  100% of the net profits from these items sold are donated to Dixie Regional Medical Center and designated for Children’s Services.

“The Jubilee of Trees is a great volunteer opportunity,” said D.J. Bauer, manager of the St. George Kohl’s department store. “It is a large event that gives many of our associates a chance to be involved. We are able to maximize our ability to raise funds for the healthcare needs of children in our community.”

The Jubilee of Trees benefits communities of southern Utah with support that strengthens the hospital’s charitable mission. In cooperation with community partners and thousands of volunteers, the Jubilee has created a gift of miracles, raising millions of dollars over the past several years. This year Jubilee supporters are working to expand Life Flight air ambulance service in southern Utah with a helicopter and Life Flight team based at Dixie Regional. Other recent initiatives have included the Jubilee Home II charitable lodging facility, newborn intensive care, maternal fetal medicine, cancer services, and over $500,000 to help build and equip the new Dixie Regional Medical Center on River Road.

The Foundation of Dixie Regional Medical Center is a Utah nonprofit corporation dedicated to inspiring giving to support Dixie Regional Medical Center with the intent of realizing a common dream—excellent healthcare close to home to save and comfort lives—regardless of means.
