Star Party and Technicolor Weekend at Cedar Breaks National Monument

At Cedar Breaks National Monument, the aspen have started to turn to gold.  Fall days are cool and bright—perfect weather to hike the Alpine Pond Trail where the red fruits of the Elderberry and wax currant glow on the understory bushes.

The final Star Parties of the season will be held at Point Supreme overlook on Saturday, Sept. 20th and Sat Sept. 27, 2008.  Join a ranger and astronomy volunteers beginning at 9:00 p.m. at Point Supreme for star viewing through several large telescopes. Visitors who own their own telescopes are invited to bring them along.

To celebrate the changing colors, the National Park Service will host a screening of the musical Can’t Help Singing at Cedar Breaks National Monument on Saturday, September 27.  This 1944 “Technicolor” movie was filmed in part at Cedar Breaks.  The film will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the visitor center and is one and a half hours in length.  Park entrance fees will be waived starting at 7 p.m. for those attending the movie.

Visitors are encouraged to dress warmly, as nighttime temperatures could be in the mid- to upper-30’s.  Bring a thermos with warm beverages and folding chairs, if you wish.  Flashlights are a good idea to assist you in finding your way to and from your car, but visitors are asked to leave flashlights turned off at the observation site.

Cloudy skies may limit night sky viewing, but the movie screening will be held in the visitor center.  Let’s hope for clear weather on Saturday, September 8th!  Questions regarding these upcoming activities may be directed to the Cedar Breaks Administrative Office at (435) 586-9451.
